Card covers on board view
Customers had wanted card covers on the board view for years, and the request sat in the backlog. During an innovation week, I prototyped it and pitched it. When engineering capacity freed up, I had a return trip to shape the final delivery. The result: a long-awaited feature that made boards easier to scan.
Before
Product teams use JPD to prioritise and share roadmaps, so boards need to look good when shared with stakeholders. Every idea card looked the same, making boards hard to scan at a glance. A customer request for card covers had been sitting in the backlog for a long time.
Key design decisions
I picked this up during an innovation week, and prototyped how card covers could work in board view. When engineering picked the feature back up, I shaped the final delivery, working through edge cases the prototype hadn't covered. Key decisions included supporting two cover types, solid colors and images, and choosing between fit and fill for image display.
Impact
The feature shipped as a long-awaited addition, giving boards a way to look visually distinct and be easier to navigate.
Reflections
Sweat the details. Getting something polished into delivery usually happens in the last leg, with design and engineering working hand-in-hand to close out decisions.
